What is Parent-child Interaction?

From the time of birth, Parent-child interactions are the primary source of social learning for children. Interactions between a parent and a child show how different mental and emotional processes like regulating and recognizing emotions, referencing, following the gaze, gesturing, and communicating work for the first time.

For example, between the second and third month of life, there are big changes in how parents and babies behave together, how they take turns, and how they treat each other. All of these are signs of a healthy attachment.

Why is Parent child Interaction important?

A healthy Parent-child Interaction helps the child grow and learn. It is essential for every child and parent to build this special bond. This relationship shapes the child‘s personality, choices in life, and behaviour as a whole. It can also strengthen their physical, mental, social, and emotional health.

Some of the benefits of Parent-child Interaction includes:

  • Young children are more likely to grow up to be happy if they feel safe and healthy with their parents. They tend to be happy with the relationships they have in their lives.

  • A child who feels safe with a parent learns how to control his or her feelings when things are hard or stressful.

  • It helps the child grow mentally, emotionally, and linguistically (language-wise).

  • It helps the child behave in social situations with optimism and confidence.

  • When parents are involved and help their kids in a healthy way, it sets them up for better social and academic skills.

  • A healthy social, emotional, cognitive, and motivational development is linked to a healthy interaction. When kids have a good interaction with their parents, they develop excellent problem-solving skills.

What is the importance of Parent child Interaction in teaching and learning at early age?

The way a parent talks to or interacts with a child is important for the child‘s language development. Children learn a lot from observing adults. They listen to their parents’ speech, understand, and pick up the language that will slowly help them communicate with others. It makes it easier for them to build relationships through the power of communication.

Every parent must engage in conversation with their children right from birth. Parents hold the power to unlock the child‘s social and emotional skills.

How should parents interact with their child?

Here are some points you can do to improve your relationship with your child:

  • Show your love: It can be done by touching and caring. It’s important that you touch your child in a gentle, loving way several times a day. Treat every moment with your child as a chance to connect with them. Greet them with a warm face, make eye contact, smile, and try to get them to talk honestly.

  • Often say “I love you”: People usually know that we love our children, but no matter how old they are, make sure to tell them every day. Even if your child is being hard or doing something you don’t like, this can be a great time to tell them you love them. A simple “I love you” can make a big difference in how you and your child get along in the long run.

  • Set limits, rules, and consequences: As children grow and learn about the world around them, they need guidance. Talk to your kids about what you want them to do and make sure they get it. When rules are broken, make sure there are consequences that are right for the child‘s age and be consistent with them.

  • Listen and empathize: The first step to making a connection is to listen. Understand how your child feels and show them that you do. Assure them that you will help them with anything they need. Try to see things from the point of view of your child. By listening to your child and putting yourself in his or her shoes, you can start to build mutual respect.

  • Play Together: Playing is so important for a child‘s growth and development. It helps kids learn how to use language, talk about their feelings, and be creative. It also helps to learn how to get along with other people. It’s also a fun way for you to spend time with your child and get to know them better. No matter what you play, it doesn’t matter. The key is to have fun together and make a promise to give your child your full attention.

  • Be available and free of distractions: Setting aside 10 minutes a day to talk without interruptions makes a big difference. It teaches people how to talk to each other well. Turn off the TV and put away your phones and tablets so you can spend time together. Your child needs to know that they are the most important thing to you.

  • Eat meals together: When your family eats together, it can be a great way to spend time with your child. Tell everyone to put away their phones and other devices and spend time with each other. Meal time is also a great time to talk to your kids about how important it is to eat well. It also effects their mental health.

  • Create parent-child rituals: Do you have more than one child? Spend time with each of them individually. Spending quality, one-on-one time with your child can make the relationship between you two stronger. It makes your child feel good about himself or herself and shows them that they are unique and important. Some parents plan “date nights” with their kids so they can spend time with them one-on-one. Things like going to the playground or watching a movie at home are great ways to celebrate each child.
